this was one of my favorite places to visit. the government employs handicapped people to make lacquered handcrafts. everything from dishware, to paintings, vases, furniture…it’s all very beautiful and the detail is amazing. eggshells, mother of pearl, and paint are used.
the infamous singing toilet. in related news, the same song plays at the end of “surrogates.” yea, bruce willis. michael said when it began to play, it made him feel like he had to go to the bathroom. pavlovian?
a food offering to the spirits in buddhist pagoda.

some of the terrible effects of agent orange. my visit to the war remnants museum was…pretty depressing.

this is a family rice business where they make popped rice snacks…sort of like rice crispie treats, but firmer (though they gave me a bite when it was hot and gooey…soooo good). first they pop the rice, then mix it with cocounut milk and sugar, spread it thin, cut it, and package it. they work with such efficiency and resourcefulness. almost everything is resused or recycled. the rice shells are used for fuel to pop the rice, for example.

boats on the mekong.
